Vor dem Hintergrund einer Digitalisierung mehr oder weniger sämtlicher Lebensbereiche beschäftigt sich dieser Schwerpunkt mit der Transformation von Wissen, Identität und Kultur in der postindustriellen Gesellschaft. Im Fokus stehen digitale Technologien und Räume unter der besonderen Berücksichtigung ihrer kommunikativen und kreativen wie auch ihrer kontrollierenden Potentiale.

Untersuchungsgegenstand sind Phänomene von Emanzipation und Kontrolle angesichts des Aufstiegs computervermittelter sozialer Bewegungen wie Freie Software Communities und gleichzeitiger steigender digitalisierter Überwachung. Den theoretisch-methodischen Rahmen bilden historische wie techniksoziologische Ansätze, Surveillance Studies und die kritische Diskurs- bzw. Dispositivanalyse.

Die Forschung richtet sich an Akteure in den Bereichen Informatik und Gesellschaft, Datenschutz und Privatheit, Privacy sowie Accountability by Design und Responsible Research and Innovation.

Computerized cultures and digital identities

This theme is concerned with the changed conditions in the constitution of knowledge, identity and culture in post-industrial society, given the fact of the digitalization of more-or-less all areas of life. In the focal point are digital technologies and spaces under the particular aspect of their communicative, creative, and controlling potential.

Objects of examination are phenomena of emanzipation and control in the light of the advance of computer-mediated social movements such as Free Software Communities, and of the simultaneous increase of digital surveillance. Historical and techno-sociological aspects, surveillance studies, and critical discourse and dispositive analysis all supply the theoretical and methodical framework.

Research is directed toward actors in the areas of computer science and society, data security and privacy, privacy, accountability by design, and responsible research and innovation.
